The CEFR in short
Six levels, one scale
The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is the scale that schools, universities and employers use to describe how well someone knows a language. The Council of Europe published it in 2001, and today it’s used far beyond Europe.
It has six levels in three bands, from A1 for a beginner to C2 for someone who handles almost anything in the language with ease. A level describes what you can do with the language, so “B2” means the same in Athens, Madrid or Berlin, whichever exam you take.
