ECPE vs C2 Proficiency: which C2 certificate suits you?

Michigan's ECPE and Cambridge's C2 Proficiency both certify mastery-level English, but they test it in very different ways. A side-by-side look at the papers.

Once you hold a B2 certificate, the next question is usually which "Proficiency" to aim for. In Greece that means a choice between the Michigan ECPE and the Cambridge C2 Proficiency (CPE). Both certify C2, the top of the CEFR scale. Both are valid for life and widely recognised. The papers, though, reward different strengths.

The papers side by side

| | ECPE | C2 Proficiency | |---|---|---| | Writing | 45 min, 1 task chosen from 2, built on 3 short sources | 90 min, 2 tasks: a compulsory essay plus 1 chosen from 3 | | Listening | 50 min, 50 questions, most recordings heard once | about 40 min, 30 questions, every recording heard twice | | Grammar, vocabulary, reading | GCVR: 55 min, 70 questions | Reading & Use of English: 90 min, 53 questions in 7 parts | | Speaking | a paired task in 5 stages | 3 parts, in pairs, with two examiners |

Where ECPE is different

Volume and speed. The GCVR packs 70 questions into 55 minutes: grammar, two cloze passages, vocabulary and reading, almost all multiple choice. Strong, fast readers do well. Hesitating over every option does not.

One writing task, built on sources. You write a single piece, an essay or an article/proposal, and you're expected to use the three short sources you're given. Ignoring them costs marks even if the English is excellent.

Most of the listening is heard once. Only the two radio segments in Part 3 are played twice. The 20 short conversations in Part 1 go quickly, so train yourself to read the options before the audio starts.

Where C2 Proficiency is different

Productive Use of English. Parts 2–4 have no options to choose from. You fill gaps with your own word, form words from a stem, and rewrite sentences using a given key word in three to eight words. These parts reward precision more than recognition.

Twice the writing. Two tasks in 90 minutes, including a compulsory essay that summarises and evaluates two short texts. Planning time is part of the skill.

A graded result. Results come on the Cambridge English Scale. A grade A is reported as above C2, and a narrow miss can still earn a C1 certificate.

So which one?

  • Choose ECPE if you read quickly, like multiple choice, and prefer a single, source-based writing task.
  • Choose C2 Proficiency if your grammar is precise under pressure and you'd rather produce language than pick it.
  • Either way, sit a timed mock of each before you commit. One afternoon tells you more than any comparison table.

certifyboost has five full mocks for each exam, with writing and speaking marked by AI against each exam's own published criteria, and Mock 1 of each is free. Try both and compare.
